Aretha is one of the only people that has received the most Grammy’s with 18 Grammy
awards. Franklin got the name “Queen of Soul”. She made a comeback from the
death of her father and her divorce. Aretha was recognized with an honorary doctorate
at University of Detroit. She even got the chance to perform for Bill Clinton at his
inauguration. Aretha Records was soon founded after releasing her final album on Arista.

Aretha Franklin did not give big hits when signed to Colombia Records. Aretha then
went to Atlantic Records and made it to the top right away. There was a mix of gospel
with piano during love songs. Aretha’s new sound helped with the time of the Civil Right
Movement in the 1960’s. Most of the songs that she had sung became soul classics.
Aretha Franklin was the iconic symbol in the advancements for the African Americans.

Franklin acted in the movie, Blues Brothers 2000, as a restaurant owner and even had
her song “Respect”. She had also updated the song too for the movie. In 1996, the singer
had signed a supposedly $10 million three album contract with Arista. After her contract
signing she was accepted into Julliard to learn classical piano.

One of the executive workers of Colombia Records believed that Colombia did not
understand her gospel background. Also, that they failed to bring her farther on where
she should’ve been. Aretha decided to create a new sound in her music, a much younger
sound. Franklin was listed in Michigan’s government as a “natural resource” because of
her voice.
