Background
This essay will analyze the US Army Corp of Engineers’ role through the principles
of war and the engineer battlefield functions in the redevelopment of Kirkuk, Iraq, more
specifically the sanitation of solid waste.
Engineers with the Gulf Region Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, are
teaching and mentoring their Iraqi counterparts on every aspect of reconstruction
project development, preparing them to continue building and managing Iraq’s
infrastructure after the coalition leaves (Fantasia, 1).
Starting in 2004, a twenty year master plan to redevelop a multiple of infrastructures focusing on
the massive garbage build up that has is a growing problem for the region was produced.
This essay is supported from a variety of sources primarily consisting of news articles
focusing on the efforts of the Corp of Engineers. The bias that may be contained within these
articles might be that a portion of this problem may rest on the shoulders of the US. A secondary
bias could be that the US will be gaining a positive image from citizens of Kirkuk.
