Due to the high level of interaction between countries in our interconnected world of today, diplomatic offices are needed in each country to aid in and allow such interactions to occur. The results of these diplomatic relationships are the embassies and consulates found in cities worldwide. An embassy is the larger and more important of the two and is described as a permanent diplomatic mission which is generally located in a country's capital city. For example the United States Embassy in Canada is located in Ottawa, Ontario. Capital cities like Ottawa, Washington D.C., and London are home to nearly 200 embassies each.
The embassy is responsible for representing the home country abroad and handling major diplomatic issues, such as preserving the rights of citizens abroad. The ambassador is the highest official in the embassy and acting as the chief diplomat and spokesperson for the home government. Ambassadors are typically appointed by the highest level of the home government. In Nigeria, ambassadors are appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate.
A Consulate is the representation of the public administration of a country in a foreign town. It is responsible for its own fellow- citizens, living or travelling in the host country. The most important duties of a consulate are:
1) To establish and renew passports and other official documents
2) To report Births, Deaths, Marriages, Divorces, Adoptions etc. that occur in the host country to the competent authorities in the home nation.
3) To inform its own citizens living abroad about the social security situation
4) To handle the military formalities and control for its own citizens liable to military service.
5) To help its own citizens in distress or other emergency situations.
6) To look after its own citizens in detention or arrest and to watch over the rule of law and fair trials.
