Journal – The Year of Domesticity
After reading the article, I felt that the article is very impulsive toward Linda Hirshman. The tone of the article and the way the author, David Brooks, responsed to Hirshman seem very serious and harsh. The author also pinpointed out every detail that is inaccurate and response to her points in sarcastic tone. I felt that there isn’t really necessary to really embarrass one another even though one of them is wrong. The two articles are clearly different because one is written by woman and the other one is written by man. Everyone has their own thinking and surely for Linda Hirshman who is trying to help women to stand up and hold on to their dream and David Brooks, on the other hand, is trying to prove other points. In my opinions, both of them are equally right and none of them is wrong. But if I have to choose side, I would vote for David Brooks. My reason is simple. He explained clearly that women who stay home have big influence in their child’s I.Q. and how they will be raised in the future. There are kids on the street who become rebelious because their parents aren’t always there for them. Also, I am fairly agreed with David Brooks with his opinions about men and women are wired differently. Like the book published by the author John Gray, Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus. Although the book is mainly focuses on the relationship, it also states the psychological difference between both genders. From my point of view, men and women need each other’s support in work and other fields. Women can always hang on to their dream by working at home and looking after the children at the same time. They should find the best possible solution that suit well in their current situation.
