2008

The year of 2008 is a year to remember. The year of 2008 will be deeply entrenched into our children’s history textbooks. The year of 2008 is a year where the concept of a colored president steps out of the realm of fictional books or movies into reality. The year of 2008 is year where ideologies that our founding fathers had fought for actualize on a whole new level. From the worst form of human rights violation to the first non-white presidential candidate, America has come a long way after countless battles between the “majorities” and “minorities”. Some may perceive these battles as negative or destructive against society, but these battles were all just part of the evolution of Democracy. Without them, contemporary America would never be the same. We would not be able to be proud of America for her freedom, her justice, and her diversity.
From coercive assimilation of Native Americans to black slavery, Chinese lynching to Los Angeles riots, many blame the “majorities” groups, which is often white Americans, for suppressing human rights and opinions of the “minorities.” Oftentimes, the “majorities” would manipulate the “minorities” through using religious reference or supernatural figures. An example would be when the “majorities”, in this case men, argued that women do not deserve suffrage rights simply because Jesus was not a woman. These arguments that solely based on religious references were widely used against “minorities” throughout the American history. Some also brought up the fact that America’s founding fathers were slaveholders themselves and that they violated their own ideologies. It is not to say that these men should be crucified for their mistakes, as because they were just too human. However, the truth is their words should not be looked upon with complete divinity, as times have changed, people, ideas, beliefs, and social norms have also changed.
