Abstract Assignment
This abstract is about three different cultures and how they deal with relationships and marriages. It discusses marriages and how the cultures delve in that area holding on to their own identity and beliefs. It also tells of the differences that are apparent in each culture.
African Descent
This abstract focuses on an African American relationship and marriage. When speaking of African American the focus is on one particular couple that have mixed cultures within their marriage but are both of African American descent. One is from Nigeria (the male) and the other is from America (the woman). These two cultures pursue similar traditions and customs. “Spirituality, communal orientation, and personal development” (Durodoye and Coker, 2008) are all shared aspects of being from African descent. In the article two individuals of African descent Nigeria and the other is from America. They have been married for three years and are now having marital issue due to their cultural differences.
The couple Shola (the husband) and Jannelle (the wife) are having conflict because they have different cultural backgrounds. Shola’s mother has come from Nigeria to help with the baby but it has caused more conflict because she does not speak English and Janelle and Shola’s mother cannot communicate. Understanding that cultural differences are the main focus of their problems will have a huge impact on how the case is handled. I have learned in this case that though both are from similar roots their cultural backgrounds are now coming to the surface and they now have to find a way to incorporate and compromise some of their beliefs to continue together.
