Format...format...format is what High school english teachers preached to all high schoolers. We came to know of several different formats for different types of essays. We were graded on how close we could keep to the format and how well we followed the prompt. We were never taught or praised for straying away from the old original format. So in most students minds in High School was to copy the original format to get the highest grade possible because who actually cares about english right? No wrong! Now that we are all in college with a mission in mind of what we want to do in life we all realize,”Oh shit, we might actually need to learn how to write a real academic essay!” In High school we all did the least possible work to pass classes but now in college we are all behind and need to learn new ways to keep up with college level academic writings.
High School essays always had a format behind them which we were always taught to stick to like glue. Teachers wanted to show us the basics of academic writing which in turn has put us behind in college. In most high school essays we stuck to the standard introductory paragraph, 2-4 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. This is the basic format that most incoming college students are basing their writings off of and now learning that their writing styles are not going to cut it in college. We must all learn new ways to express whatever we are taught in new ways that college professors will find acceptable. We all have our own unique personal writing style, we just have to learn it.
In basic level college english classes, professors give these types of assignments to learn how much we have strayed away from “formated” writings and to see how close we are to discovering our unique writing style. College english professors do this to see where we are at so they know what to teach us to help us move forward. English professors are here to help us get through college easier not just give us stuff...
