Drug Trafficking in America
The pressure to break the law comes from the desire to achieve wealth and power (Conklin, 2010.) Drug trafficking in America is a prime example of the desire to achieve this wealth and power. Drug trafficking will not disappear at the snap of a finger; however, there are means to prevent and control this ongoing issue in America. This paper will examine the issue of drug trafficking; the reporting of such illegal act in the United States, its relationship to other crimes and the importance of the actions that are taken to prevent and control it.
There are agencies that report on the trafficking of drugs in and out of our country. It is important to know the amount, type and effect of such illicit drugs that are present in our country. Numerous agencies report on the amount and types of illicit drugs that enter the country or are produced here. One such group, the National Drug Intelligence Center (NDIC) “…is a component of the U.S. Department of Justice and a part of the national intelligence community. Each year the NDIC publishes the National Threat Assessment, a comprehensive report on drug trafficking and abuse trends within the United States” (Schmalleger, 2011).
The National Threat Assessment 2011 has reported that, “the illicit trafficking and abuse of drugs present a challenging, dynamic threat to the United States” (National Drug Threat Assessment, 2011, pp.1). In the assessment it is reported that in 2007, the illicit drug use has caused an economic cost of “… more than $193 billion” (National Drug Threat Assessment, 2011, pp.1). This estimate is a mere reflection of public costs, health, and lost of productivity due to the availability of drugs.
