Michael Holbrook Penniman, as known as Mika, is a pop male singer artist and a songwriter. He begin his debut as a singer with his album called, ‘Life in Cartoon Motion’ in 2007. I choose this album cover because it is catching my eyes with its colorful image. Therefore, in this essay I will review and analyze the visual design of his album cover by looking on some important points of an album cover such as the genre of his music, the style and the size of font that he use, the image and the color on his album cover, the icon in it, the representation of his album cover, and the target audience of his album.
First, we will see on the genre of his music style. In his first album, ‘Life in Cartoon Motion’, Mika set all of his song as pop in genre. “British pop newcomer Mika has knocked X Factor winner Leone Lewis off the top of the UK singles chart after four weeks at number one.” (contactmusic.com, 2007). Just like a common pop artist’s album cover, no guns or no parental advisory sticker, his album is filled with a lot of color and image in front side and back side of his cover. It makes the audience to recognize his album even if they look from the back side. In the front side of his cover, there are many things including his name and the picture of himself. While the list of the songs in the album, the official website, and the credits are available in the back side of the album.
Second, we move on to the style and the size of font that he use in his album cover. Mika use a common and simple font style, looks like a bold arial font style, on his name. Its size is big and it is in capital letter with a white color in it which almost dominate the whole front cover. For instance, with the big and white color, he tells the audience that his music style is easy listening, qualified, and innocent.
