Alcohol and Family Violence Paper
Alcohol is legal and socially acceptable, it is the American way of life, celebrations and parties have alcohol as part of the celebration. Children grow up seeing the glamorization of alcohol, on television, movies, and music videos. Yet alcohol is the cause of a nasty disease called alcoholism. Alcoholism has been around for many centuries, there are regulations and laws passed to help with the issue. The prohibition in the United States was a ban of Alcohol that lasted from 1920-1933. It was thought that would solve the problem of alcohol consumption. Alcoholism and violence seem to be an issue that go hand in hand. According to the national Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism “Alcohol may encourage aggression or violence by disrupting normal brain function,” a person may not be aggressive but with alcohol consumption it brings out their aggression.
Alcohol and family violence have been impacted by legislative changes throughout history with state legislatures pushing and writing laws to punish domestic violence perpetrators. With time legislatures have authorized officials to purse and give out harsher punishments to domestic violence offenders. Violence against Women act (VAWA), the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA), were both passed to help punish offenders and help the victims of abuse. Alcohol age limits are another way of the government regulating alcohol consumption. Many states have passed legislation for mandatory imprisonment for habitual offenders. There are also harsher punishment for repeat driving under the influence offenders, and for repeat offenders.
Alcohol may impact a person during different cycles of life, for a pregnant mother can cause pregnancy problems, cause developmental problems of fetus and lifelong health problems. For children can cause long standing emotional &...
