Aligning Individual Success with Organizational Goals
Setting up an effective performance and career management plan ensures that employees understand their responsibilities, and that they are motivated and aligned with the new business strategy. Performance and career management involves planning and setting goals to create a system of predictable rewards for good performance and consequences for poor performance. This planning includes defining expectations, and communicating feedback regularly and in a timely fashion. Employees should be given the opportunity to learn more and to grow within the company and within varying fields of the company (Ellis-Christensen). An effective performance management system incorporates the key performance indicators that are cascaded down from the organization’s strategy and culture. Essentially an employee with positive ratings is effectively aligned with the corporate strategy (Anonymous, 2008).
Performance Standards
As stated on the Association for Leadership and Development’s website, the basis of any performance plan is a set of definite goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, results-oriented, and time-framed (ald-inc.com). InterClean has already taken the first step towards a performance management system by setting up workforce planning which includes preparing detailed position requirements. Using the key functions associated with the detailed position requirements, goals or objectives can be set for employees. Performance standards are observable behaviors and actions which explain how the job is to be done, plus the results that are expected for satisfactory performance. The performance standards communicate expectations (Indiana.edu, 2005). Managers should include employees in the development of their performance goals, because they will buy into the plan more easily, and they will own the plan.
