“Alone” by Maya Angelou

Tone and Voice
I chose the poem “Alone” by Maya Angelou, the tone or her attitude in this poem to be can be understood different ways. To me the author is worried, fearful, and desperate to emphasize that no matter how well you do in life or how much money you have no one will reach their full capacity of happiness without companionship. Whether that companionship be by your friends, family, spouse, or even associates she is trying to express absolutely no one can make it out here alone everyone needs someone. When I read this poem silently I just saw it as a person thinking themselves alone in bed However when I read it aloud it can seem to go from one person speaking to the voices of other folks in Stanza 3, she's already dealing with the whole community. It's safe to assume that she's no longer talking to herself in bed at night. She's got an audience. The author believe is doing the speaking because the poem is a clear message from someone personal experience. A lot of Maya Angelou poems are from her personal experiences that have an amazing message behind them. There have been some of Angelou works that I knew just from reading them, but their also have been some I didn’t recognize as her works.
Alone starts off with our speaker which is the author starts out as a person who lets all sorts of thoughts run through her head because she just can't seem to sleep then starts doing some serious soul-searching . She's feeling pretty isolated, but she thinks she just might have come up with an answer to her problems: people need other people in their lives in order to get by. As it turns out, money won't buy you happiness. Even the very, very rich get lonely. So, don't try to make more money. Make friends instead. Our speaker fashions herself into something like a prophet, warning the "race of man" that things aren't about to get any easier anytime soon.
