Alternative Dispute Resolution
Working on teams can be challenging for anyone. When working on a team each member brings various skills and opinions to the table. With multiple opinions, it may be hard to come to a consensus on how to effectively complete the task. Although brainstorming will give members numerous options to choose from, some may believe that their choice should be used. This disagreement may cause conflict amongst members causing a standstill on the progress of the assignment. When these conflicts arise they must be handled so that all members can come to and agreement.
Disagreement
After brainstorming on ideas and ways to complete the assignment, the team has agreed that two options are the best choices. However, they can’t come to an agreement on which one should be used. The team tries to include parts of both options but neither side wants to abandon their ideas. Each side argues their point to each other but fail to reach a consensus.
Resolution
Once it is determined that the team cannot come to an agreement, the group will meet with an arbitrator. In the meeting with the arbitrator, each member will have the opportunity to discuss their views and why they believe their process should be used. Members will also state the cons of the other member’s option. After hearing each member’s views the arbitrator will review the documents for clarity. The arbitrator will then create a plan that he believes includes both parties’ ideas. The arbitrator will then present a recommendation he believes will be acceptable for all parties. After the team has heard the recommendations they will make final provisions. The arbitrator will then put the outcome in writing and both parties will sign an agreement approving the results.
