American Beauty Themes
In American Beauty, there are many themes within this one film; as the film open it begins with sexuality and love then the producer spins the film by adding mystery, freedom, and hummer. As this themes come along in the film it keeps the audience guessing what will come next. Without the mixture of all these different themes this film wouldn’t have been as great as it is. The director is able to make all the themes interact with each other and yet keep the story simple and interesting.
Happiness in American Beauty is all make belief. The Burnham family is fist seen as a happy family because everything seems and look perfect. They eat together; listen to music while having dinner it just seems like a perfect family. Lester finally comes to a point while listening to her daughter and her friend’s conversation and decides that he could change his life around and be happy. He begins to look for happiness by paying close attention to what he wanted in his life. He got to a point where he would ignore his wife. At the end of the film, even though Lester died he knew that he had been happy for the last days of his life.
Carolyn is a person that wants people to know that she and her family are perfect and that makes her happy. She doesn’t care what her family members think she just cares about herself. Carolyn was told by her lover that if she was successful she would be happy, so she believed it and acted happy. Jane is fills miserable because of the way her father and mother are. She wanted a normal life.
American Beauty has many sex scenes, from the beginning when Lester is masturbating while taking a shower. There is also a scene when Carolyn is in the hotel and she is having sex with her lover. One of the most important sexual scenes that I saw was the scene where Ricky’s dad kisses Lester’s lip; showing that he is gay.
