While most people consider the United States is one the richest countries in the world, they probably don’t know it has one of the poorest ghetto in the world as well, I was one of the most people until I read a book called "Amazing Grace” by Jonathan Kozol, who is a non-fiction writer, activist , and educator, well known for his books on public education in the United States; however, Amazing Grace” also includes a great deal of property issues that are being directly analyzed, wisely discussed and unreservedly pointed out the causes to support his point of view on the lifes of children and the conscience of a nation. There are all different voices about the causes from politicians, scientists, and radio and newspaper commentators. One of them is particularly interesting which I believed it is true "If poor people behaved rationally, they would seldom be poor for long in the first place."(21); however, after reading the book, I gained some new perspectives to life and redefine the definitions of individual effort and circumstance criteria. In the following paragraphs, I would like share my opinions and responses to Lawrence Mead’s statement after learing some other characters thoughts form the book.
Rational behaviour is not useful if the peoson is born in the wrong place. Right after the statement, Alice Washingtons’s story illstruates that someone’s fate has nothing to do indivdual effort and it is closely related to where that person is born, what color is that person and what social circle the person in. I totally agree with David’ interpreation of evil,”Somebody has power. Pretending that they don’t so they don’t need to use it help people-that is my idea of evil,”(23) because as the prelude to the United States Constitution declares, a government is required in order to "form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to...
