Over seventy million animals are tortured and killed a year in U.S. laboratories. Rabbits are routinely blinded by scientist putting chemicals in their eyes. They call this the Draize System. The Draize System does not guarantee human safety, but, protects the company from potential lawsuits. Cats and dogs are constantly being used for cosmetic testing that is painful, and leaves them permanently harmed. The Food and Drug Administration approved the sale of cloned animals and their offspring for food in January 2008. While this is a milestone for mankind; how many animals had to suffer so we could make that milestone. The FDA did this despite fierce opposition from animal and consumer advocacy groups, environmental organizations, the public, the dairy industry, and Congress. Those are not the only ways that animals are being mistreated. There are countless others. Why is no one doing anything about it? If your pet was taken away to be researched on, how hard would you fight to get it back? Why is any other animal different? Are there needs really any different from ours? They breathe air like we do. They have beating hearts like us.
Professor Charles R. Magel once said, "Ask the experimenters why they experiment on animals, and the answer is: ‘Because the animals are like us. “Ask the experimenters why it is morally okay to experiment on animals, and the answer is: 'Because the animals are not like us. Animal experimentation rests on a logical contradiction." There is nothing that is ethical about this. It’s almost sick!
Testing on animals breaks the laws on animal rights. Animal activist have given animals the rights to avoid suffering and should be afforded the same consideration as the interests of human beings. Animals should no longer be regarded as property, clothing, or research subjects.
