The term management has developed over a long period of time. It is in essence as old as the mankind, however, its usage as a field of study or specialisation came much later. In the historical days when massive armies had to march across hundreds of miles to launch attacks for expansion of the regimes, there was a huge focus on the Men. Being the ultimate weapon of skill, this resource had to be managed very carefully for Tactical advantage over the enemy. So Manage + men+ tactfully became the backbone of “Management”. But this remained a Military specific term for a long time, say till the extensive damages in the world wars forced business and industries to think about means and processes to re-build whatever was lost. Business as a focus area for means of development came into existence. With the growth of business & industry, supporting manufacturing & ancillary markets including agro chains and food processing systems developed.These came to be known as support businesses and needed to be managed. With expansion of businesses, banking expanded and the synergy of bank finance with business came in another field which needed specially tailored systems to suit commerce & trade. The processes which came in had to be either newly proven amounting to re-inventing the wheel, or adopted from existing ones which could deliver the necessary impetus to growth. Thus the Management practices of the military for tactical advantage over adversaries, when adopted by businesses became what are now known as “Business Management”.
Why one should study management? It is not necessarily, the potential of this subject as a career opportunity but a larger purpose which should be seen by every student. The subject in ten letters covers a plethora of fields that govern every aspect of modern living.
