In John Knowles’ Novel, A Separate Peace, Finny symbolizes the summer session by being adventurous, carefree and athletic. During the summer students mostly do athletic things just as Finny does in the summer session at Devon. Finny’s carefree sense represents the summer. The adventurous Finny symbolizes how finny is connected to the summers at Devon Being an adventurous time.
Finny’s adventurous personality is expressed in the summer session. First of all, he shows his adventurous character when he jumps off the tree. As he jumps off the tree he’s attempting an exploit that no other student off his age has ever attempted before. Also he gets into a snowball fight with his friends. The snowball fight shows his thrive to have adventure even in his injured body. Finny demonstrates his love for adventure when he states, “We’d better organize a winter carnival” (121). This quotation expresses his love for adventure as he creates a winter carnival in the bore of the winter times. All these examples express how he’s adventurous in ways not only physically but mentally.
Not only is his personality shown in his adventure by all the things he does. but Finny’s carefree personality is expressed in the summer session too. He also reveals his carefree personality when he wears his tie as a belt. Gene states, “Phineas was the essence of careless peace” (24). This relates to why he would wear the tie as a belt as careless peace can be connected to summers carelessness but peace too. Finny also does not care about his academic success. He assumes that people are naturally smart, so he doesn’t work to his potential to get good grades. Likewise, when Gene was studying he interrupts him to force him to go jump off the tree. The event shows that Finny is more interested in jumping off the tree and having fun then his friend’s academic goals for success. His Carefree sense is conveyed in the summer session by his carefree actions.
