Applying Ethics in Practice

Working in the human service department there will be times when you do not agree with your client and your personal values could become an ethical issue. My client Ted is married with 2 younger children. A boy age 4 and a little girl age 2. He has been married to his wife for 5 years and admitted to me that he is having an affair and wants a divorce. I have met his family before because they are in need of housing and food services. They are a very sweet family. I am a strong believer of marriage and commitment. I do not believe any party of a marriage should cheat and it is against my moral value. I also do not understand how he could just leave his wife and children. Even though I am against what Ted has told me and what he is doing, I must find a way to get around it and help him and his family with support. I can use an ethnical model and code of ethics to resolve this issue. First, I would need to identify the problem. Secondly, identify the potential issues involved. Thirdly, I would review the relevant ethnic’s code. Fourthly, I need to know the applicable laws and regulations. Fifthly, I need to obtain consultation. The sixth step is to consider possible and probable courses of action. The seventh step would be to enumerate the consequences of various decisions. The eighth and final step is to choose what appears to be the best course of action. An ethnical decision making model that I would use to guide me would be the feminist model. With this model, the client is fully involved. It involves consulting with the client fully and appropriately, so the chances of making the best decision are applicable. The client will help to make the best decision by counseling, and talking through problems. If I am still unable to get past my ethnical issues then I will refer him to another helper that can.
