The use of English in teaching Science and Mathematics at schools should be abolished.
B. Another reason why the use of English in teaching Science and Mathematics at schools should not be abolished is it will affect the progress and competitiveness of the country globally.
1. When national language is use to teach in schools for Science and Mathematics, students fail to perform globally because of the language barrier as our national language is not an international language.
i. As a result, chances for students from our country to compete in international competition in science and mathematics field are very low and it affects the reputation of our country in the aspect of education.
ii. UNESCO (2011) also states that using English as medium to teach in schools has positive impact on learning and learning outcomes in countries like Singapore, Pakistan, Philippines, Hong Kong or even India.
iii. According to Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad (2015), in order to make sure that Malaysia is not left out in the current scientific fields, English ability in Science and Mathematics is significant.
2. Malaysia not only cannot compete globally in terms of educational level if the use of English in teaching Science and Mathematics is abolished in schools but also in terms of quality workforce.
i. This is because there are many students who score numerous A’s in examinations when their mother tongue is used as the medium to teach but a sad number of truly successful professionals in the fields of sciences and mathematics as the system of education did not enable them to become thinkers when they are too comfortable with their mother tongue.
ii. Khairy J. (2015 as cited in Achariam, 2015) found that Malaysia’s competitive edge is in critical jeopardy on account of the shrinking English speaking labour force and the failure to generate enough quality and skilled employees who are adequate in English in the time to come.
