Art 101 Checkpoint

The metropolitan area of Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia also known as the DMV, has been revitalized by massive amounts of tourists that come to the area to view not only historical sites, but also various art galleries. As a part-time resident I do believe that the community has been supported heavily by various agencies, and one of my favorite, DC Advocates for the arts. DC Advocates offers grant programs to artists to showcase their talents. Financially speaking there hasn’t been enough support for arts in society. The US congress cut the funding from 9.5 million in 2010 to a mere 1 million dollars in 2012 (dcadvocatesforthe hearts.org). Even though there were budgetary cuts from the government, the organization has steadily taken on the task of restoring and nurturing creativity in the DMV. The organization persistently campaigns in the community by sending out petitions, communicating through various social network sites, and partnering with various business, and professionals such as, The Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts, and Center for the Healing Arts. There is also an advocacy arts day, which brings to the forefront the challenge in conserving the art form in the DMV, and how citizens can be impactful in helping arts prosper in their community. My role as a resident is to be proactive, by volunteering my services in whatever capacity is needed. Something such as buying local artwork endorses the artists within the area and generates revenue. Donating and supporting arts initiatives in my community is another way to support my community. Maintaining and creating a creative environment I believe, leads to a healthier atmosphere. Art will always be a topic of discussion for it is sensory,
