My painting is called Potrero Hill. The artist name is Wayne Thiebaud he was born in America in 1920. This painting is oil on canvas and is 36in. tall and 44 in. wide. this painting was made in 1976.
The subject is houses on a hill that is on top of what looks to be an overpass. In my opinion this is a representational piece of art although it does look to be unordinary. The artist used a lot off depth in his painting that makes the sky look as if it extends out as far as the eye can see. The way the houses are place at first glance it looks as thought they are just on a hill but when you take a better look there is a little highway on the bottom with an overpass that cars are driving through. There are many curves in the painting as well that give u a sense of depth to the hills. I notice that there are many complimentary colors in the paintings, for example the houses that are beside each other almost go in order on the color wheel being one across form the other. There is much palett in this painting. I like the fact that there is actual texture in the painting making everything look so real. There is also some impasto in the sky to make the white and the blue blend very well. There seems to be another road on the top near the houses that you can faintly see cars driving on it. It strange that the artist puts some things in the paintning that you really cant recognize. Even though the painting is representational there are some things that are hard to make out. Its almost as if the artist were making the houses on the hill the focal point of this piece because as I mentioned earlier I didn’t even recognize the cars on the bottom to begin with....
