Tesla CEO Elon Musk did not do the right thing when he blogged about impending layoffs before announcing them to company employees. I understand that he wanted to avoid disgruntled employees from writing inaccurate information on the internet, but it was wrong for him to leak that information to the public before the employees. He should have thought about employees seeing that blog prior to being informed by the company, and then he opened a door for lawsuits from those laid off employees. Also it made the company look as though they did not care about their employees. They were more worried about covering themselves, then the welfare of those employees being laid off.
Employees should always be careful of what they blog about their company. Blogging about your place of business can allow employers to fire that employee or write them up. For example, I work at a pest control company and we had a field technician that was uploading videos on YouTube and broadcasting his daily routine. He did not intentionally state anything bad about our company, but he made it seem as though he did not enjoy his work. To make it worse, he was videoing while driving a company vehicle and wearing his uniform with our company’s logo on it. It came to the attention of our human resources department and they researched the videos and found that he was a liability to the company and was let go that afternoon. I understand that some people do not like their jobs and rather be doing something else, but broadcasting how much you do not like your job allows the company to find someone else that will be willing to work.
Employees that blog about their companies should disclose their identity and the identity of their businesses. When they disclose their information and the information about their company, they leave an open door to liability.
