The basic website design of a business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) consists of a user friendly interface that’s easy to navigate and understood. The websites should provide relevant content and place a premium on download speed to load the homepage. In addition, basic website design should consist of a sitemap that allows the user to navigate quickly through the website. Customers have very short attention spans and a poorly designed website will often cause the customer to be gone like the wind. Thus, the benefits industry leaders Dell Computer and Amazon.com derived from a website designed with a proper navigation layout and usability are paramount to the company’s mission success. A properly designed website will keep visitors on the site, maximize sales of the company’s products, promote repeat business, and generate customer satisfaction. Amazon.com’s B2C website is a product-based company that exhibits a high volume of web traffic. Thus, designing a website that is user friendly and easy to navigate is critical to the company’s success in ecommerce. The layout of Amazon.com’s website has a left side menu list for all the main product categories and features plus services. Once the mouse is position over the main product categories sub-categories appear in a balloon to further assist the user in finding a product very quickly. Equally important, the most useful sections are located at the top of the website such as the shopping cart, account information, today’s specials, gift cards, wish lists, help link, recommendations, and a product search window. Amazon did an exception job on the overall layout of the website with link placement, color combinations that are visually appealing, website layout and function, and the positioning of the graphics and text.
