Balancing Work and Family
An industrial-organizational psychologist has several factors to consider when designing an intervention for Kathy Kudler. Ms. Kudler has several events and situations occurring in her life that are causing her to experience burnout in both her work and family life. To ensure her emotional well-being the intervention must help her balance work, her children, her mother, and her fiancé. Ms. Kudler is currently experiencing difficulties balancing her time and the quality of the time she spends with work and her personal life. The following three interventions could help Ms. Kudler cope with her situation better.
Family Friendly Policies
Because Ms. Kudler is the boss she can and should become more flexible about her work schedule. She can arrive at work later in the day and leave earlier, and allow management employees to handle her tasks in her absence. The establishment of family friendly policies (FFPs) will help her and her employees (Rupashree & Shivganesh, 2010). Employees would be more likely to be flexible with their schedules to accommodate her if they know the same will be done for them if they need the same considerations. A FFP would also increase morale of her employees, which would reduce the stress she experiences at work.
Another way to improve flexibility is to telecommute as frequently as possible. Many times people physically attend work when it is not necessary. Many of the billing, scheduling, and ordering tasks can occur via computer from any location. Some of the other tasks that require physical presence could likely occur at the hands of other employees. Telecommuting is an excellent way to work around her children’s schedules, and the demands that the treatment of her mother’s cancer will put on her time.
