What is the number one advice when you go on a date for the first time? BE YOURSELF. This may be not as easy as it seems though. In the play “Top dog/ Underdog” Suzan- Lori Parks argues that “You’re only yourself, when no one is watching.” In the play, Link and Booth are typical brothers who fight for the upper hand, and do so by tricking each other with various mind games. Suzan- Lori Parks understands that getting the approval of others around us, cause people to change certain aspects of their personalities.
“When no one is watching” can be taken in various different ways. Does that mean when you are alone? Or maybe, what I think and I think what Suzan Lori Parks meant was that when no one is watching is a setting where you have no one to impress or make an impact on. As human beings, we are social freaks; we thrive off communicating with one another and interacting with other people. We often adapt little aspects of our personality so that we can seem friendlier to new people. Since the two brothers are already so comfortable with each other they should be themselves when they are with each other because their comfort level with one another is already at a max. They have both been through the same struggles; they have both seen each other at their very highs and lows in life. This theme that Suzan Lori Parks is conveying is true even when the two brothers, Booth and Link are together. Basically no one is watching, they have no one to impress and all manners and worries are basically out the door and their true self comes out. An example of where Link is his true self and Booth doesn’t realize it is the scene where Booth steals two ties for the two of them. Link, who actually liked Booths tie better, tricked Booth and said “Grace likes bright colors don’t she? My tie is bright, yrs is too subdued” (35). Booth agreed and they both switched ties.
