Question 5: In your life experience, what is the best advice you have ever received?
The most profound and valuable piece of advice I have ever received was by my mother who told me that, ‘everything happens for a reason’. My mother’s advice was so true and applicable. It gave me hope when bad things happened to me or when things turned out differently from the way I expected. I kept her advice close to my heart because throughout my life, I face upsetting situations rather easy. Since I was a little girl, my mother always told me to be patient. She believed that “everything happens for a reason” regardless the situations happened for good or bad reasons. Listening to her advice brought tranquility and calmness in me. It made me put her advice in mind and apply it in my everyday life.
As I work in a school, a place where teachers have to deal with human all the time, I have to be strong and learn how to be a good listener. Human are fragile and sensitive. I must choose my words very carefully to avoid people from having hard feeling towards me. However, at certain times, I have to be in control for the sake of my responsibility. If I heard rumors that people unsatisfied with the way I conducted certain events, the reminiscence of my mother’s advice which is “everything that happens are for reason”. As I remembered that, it helps me go through the day.
Every time I came across the situations that made me mad or upset, for instance, missing a bus to school, getting ideas rejected by colleagues, or people backstabbed me; I will close my eyes and remember what my mother has told me, which is, “everything happens for a reason”. I asked myself why that certain things happened to me, what have I done wrong, where did I made mistake, it bothers me a lot and makes me lose focus.
