In the article “Give the University an Hour” by Marlow Barlow, he explains his stance on why he thinks having a University Hour is important. University hour is a time when no classes were scheduled and activities were held in hopes of fostering a campus-wide community. However, SJSU recently voted not to have a university and that is ironic according to Barlow. He believes that college should not just be about classes, but more of a community feeling for future job connections, making friends that would last, and experience the purpose of college. Barlow explains that SJSU is known to be a commuter school; therefore, he believes that if that does not change, then why not take the next step and hold all the classes online? I agree with Barlow for having a university hour in SJSU.
College is a once in a lifetime experience and it is also very expensive to afford. I believe that by having university hour makes the money worth. My first reason for having a university hour would be support from peers. I believe that getting support in college is very important because finals and midterms are very stressful and by having support from peers, they can keep us sane. Based on my personal experience, around my midterms, I was stressed because I needed to do so much in so little time. But having peers who are willing to study with me at the library made a huge difference because I realized that not only they’re there to support me but they’re also studying at the same time as I which gave me extra motivation to work ever harder.
By having a university hour, it gives the students in SJSU a sense of purpose for college. I believe that college should not just be about classes but get a feeling of independence and make friends that would last for a lifetime. I believe that college is really the “last stop” for independence and not much responsibility until we graduate and getting a real job.
