Are the Borders Really Out of Control?

Over the past decade or so the United States has been faced with an immigration problem. Similar to the immigration boom in the early twentieth century, we once again find seemingly countless amounts of people storming our country. America has the potential to face many devastating problems if this issue is not acted upon before it gets any more out of our control. Although there are many benefits of immigration, it has been documented that with the increase of illegal immigration crime rates rise; therefore, more tax money is spent on incarceration. Also, with broken borders we run the risk of more terrorism and the need to spend our funds in fighting this threat. Additionally, the threats filter into the job market where our less educated citizens often loose jobs to the illegal immigrant. Also, the drain on our welfare system by illegal immigrants is becoming a problem for alarm.
Over the last century laws and regulations have been created as an attempt to filter this problem out. However, these regulations are becoming less and less effective as more people become persistent on entering our country. Currently in the United States, more than twenty percent of the population is estimated as foreign-born, one of the highest rates of all time (Immigration Policy Reports). Even worse, more than eight million immigrants now live in the country illegally according to the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS); that figure is one million more than previously thought. Numbers indicate that up to 500,000 illegal immigrants have been flowing into our country since 1990. Many of these illegal immigrants come from countries such as Mexico, El Salvador, and Guatemala. The states which contain the most illegal immigrants are California, Texas, and New York (Statistics-Illegal Alien Resident Population).
