Boys and girls are mature enough by the age of 16 to drive cars on our roads.
The reason why I chose this topic is because I would like to drive at the age of 16. Boys and girls are maturing earlier these days. Studies have shown this to true both physically and emotionally. More is expected of them, academically and socially. Society and the whole world are moving faster in a technological way and teenagers are expected to keep up with this changing world.
You may get a Pilot’s license at the age of 16 and Pilots exams are much harder than a driving exam in both practical and in the writing of it. You are also able to take your motorbike license at the age of 16 for a lower powered bike. If you are mature enough to ride a bike then surely you could drive a car at eh age of 16. In America you can qualify at the age of 16 and it seems it works there. It is probably surviving because the legal age at which you can drink in America is 21 years of age. You are also less likely to be driving drunk in South Africa as you can only purchase alcohol at the age of 18. This gives you at least 2 years’ experience of driving sober, making you a more confident. You would then have had some experience and be able to handle the car in any given emergency.
Driving around at 16 would also ease parental stress about getting teens to and from school because there is very little public transport for students to safely travel around to and from school. They can use their own cars knowing that they are safer than using taxis. There is also a bigger opportunity to train drivers for their license at school. Many people have jobs at the age of 18 and may not have the time to do their driver’s license. There could also be a restriction on the capacity of the engine of the car. E.g. a 1, 4 or 1.8 l engine. (As is the case in driving a motor bike. You drive nothing over a 125 cc engine)
