Fundamentals of Effective Communication in the Workplace
An example of effective communication in a business environment was when I was asked by my manager to work with the Field Managers, Invoice Processing team, and the database expert on our team to create a database that would allow the Field Managers to enter equipment work requests needed in the field. The database would need to be able to process approvals from upper management via email and also allow the Field Personnel to enter a work complete date once the work has been completed. Since my team is scattered across the United States the only way to get everyone’s input was to hold conference calls and Web X meetings. After the database was created and in test mode, the Invoice Processing Team identified several key Field Personnel to look at the database and voice their opinions and any problems they could see with rolling it out to the field. Several months after beginning the process of creating the database, it all came together and it was rolled out to the Field.
The first reason that the communication was effective is because all members of the team were involved in making decisions on what information was included in the database and how it was arranged. This made the team feel like their opinions and ideas were valued by management and it increased their level of commitment to making the project a success.
The second reason that the communication was effective is because the entire team was highly motivated and listened to all the different points of view that were presented. The team was able to discuss all the different views and agree on what would be the best for the entire company.
