Addressing a case of inappropriate office politics, a consultant identifies two alternative strategies to affect a better outcome. The consultant meets with the stakeholders to provide a business strategies proposal and carefully must exercise contingency power to influence a positive response to the proposal.
Problematic Situation at Washington on the World
Two colleagues at the Washington, D.C. based entertainment association, Washington on the World (WOW); young and charming VP of Public Relations, Nonna Klew, and Paul E. Tix, a seasoned board member; were so close that when the CEO of WOW was fired, Nonna was thrilled to respond positively to Paul’s request to help Paul win the CEO position in hopes of continued friendship and professional favors. Paul asked Nonna to coach him for the application of the position; in the key players, the problems, the fee schedule, and the relationships with political powerhouses, that provided Paul with an insider’s understanding of the agency to become the number one candidate for the CEO position. Nonna expected Paul to return her the favor once he became the CEO. However, no sooner than Paul got the CEO position, Paul aligned with all the other vice presidents, all male, and Nonna became persona non grata at WOW. Nonna saw no other way than phasing herself out of WOW and sought in the meantime to bargain herself into getting the largest buy-out in the association’s history as she exited the association. Six months later, Paul left WOW as he became the senator of his home state, a win he had gained through his work at WOW; an organization with ties in nearly industry and the government.
