The average weight of California Quail is between 150.6 g to 189.5 g (5 - 7 oz.). Males are a little bit heavier. An adult California quail can grow to be 25 cm (9.8 in) in length. The wingspan in the quail is about 32-37 cm (13-15 in). They have a distinctive black and white pattern on the face and the stomach has black and brown feather tips which makes the bird look like it kinda has scaled underparts. The overall color is mainly blue-grey and brown. The crown is chestnut colored with white streaks along the sides. California quail have black bills and grey legs. The sexes are look somewhat different. The males have a black throat and the females have more of a greyish colored throat with black streaks. California quail can be identified by their teardrop-shaped plume or a double plume on the forehead that falls down in their face. Immature California quail are mainy colored mostly grey and brown.
The California Quail is a permanent resident and doesn’t migrate. It moves seasonal with its home range. It isn’t really a common resident in the eastern United States, but it is a fairly common bird in the western United States. The California Quail can be found in the Pacific coast region of the United States. Its original range stretched from Baja California to a small portion of Western Nevada and the southern counties of Oregon. Since the California Quail is kept as a pet sometimes, it has been successfully introduced to other regions of the United States such as Northern Nevada, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Utah. It has also been introduced in Chile, New Zealand, and British Columbia.
California Quail are most often found in habitats that have food-producing plants, and also shrubs for cover. Many forest type environments provide a good habitat, as do residential areas, parks, roadsides, and traditional agriculture areas. They are used to semiarid environments, which usually ranges from sea level to 4000 feet and sometimes even up to 8500 feet or higher. But...
