Roberta, Linnea, and Stacey are only the few of my family members that have had cancer. Only one out of these three have survived, the other two weren’t so lucky. Cancer is a group of diseases in which cells in a part of the body begin to grow out of control. Cancer has become a worldwide disease. In 2008, 7.6 million people died from this horrible killer. Cancer is a leading cause of deaths worldwide, but the World Health Organization and International Agency for Research on Cancer support the International Union Against Cancer to promote ways to help fight cancer such as World Cancer Day.
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death in the world today. Studies show that one in three people will suffer from some type of cancer in their lifetime. Cancers account for approximately 13% of all deaths each year with the most common being: lung cancer, stomach cancer, liver cancer, colorectal cancer, and breast cancer. The total deaths of just these cancers alone each year is about 3.9 million. About 30% of cancer deaths are due to behavioral and dietary risks such as high body mass index, low fruit and vegetable intake, lack of physical activity, tobacco use, or alcohol use. Tobacco use is the most important risk factor for cancer causing 22% of global cancer deaths and 71% of global lung cancer deaths. Prostate cancer is the first most common cancer in men. The rates of prostate cancers vary across the world, with South and East Asia less frequently than in Europe and the United States. The most common cancer in women is Breast cancer. Worldwide, breast cancer comprises 22.9% of all cancers in women. Breast cancer is more than 100 times more common in women than breast cancer in men, although males tend to have poorer outcomes due to delays in diagnosis. Leukemia is the most common cancer in children. It accounts for about 1 out of 3 cancers in children. Overall, however, childhood leukemia is a rare disease.
