Patrick Smith English 101 Section 14 Rhetorical Analysis Paper 2/08/2009 The Great Modern Debate During the 20th century one debate, Capitalism vs. Communism, consumed all peoples of the great countries in the world. The debate has many strong supporters most notably the United States for capitalism, and the Soviet Union defending Communism. By the end of the 1980s however, the Soviet Union had collapsed, and while there were still a few countries supporting communism the case was quite clear that capitalism had prevailed to become the better system. Today, the story is much different, as we have moved into the 21st century a new great debate of economic systems has begun. This great debate is between that of capitalism and socialism which, even though it has been a debate before the new century, is intensifying each year. The great champion of capitalism is again the United States, but instead of having just one solidified opponent to pit itself against the opposition to capitalism is coming from both inside the country, and the majority of nations around the world. The debate has staunch supporters for both sides, and both of the following author’s arguments have extreme biases towards one side, but this extreme bias helps to intensify the debate to help people better make an informed decision of what they believe is the right system to follow. The author’s main argument for socialism comes from the point that this economic system is there to help the poor and lower levels of society by giving government funding to them to help provide basic necessities. By doing this, he argues, economic stability and an overall happier general public will serve to better the nation as a whole rather than how capitalism focuses on the individual. This ethical argument he uses is a great example of the multiple ploys he uses throughout the essay to show that socialism is the ethical choice when conducting economics.
