Obesity in America has become a big problem, being fat has become normal now. The idea of an acceptable body size has changed in some people’s minds. Today one out of three Americans is obese, twice as many as three decades ago. In Japan and Korea, only 3.2% of the population is obese, Fewer than 10% are obese in Switzerland, So why are Americans so fat? Some reasons could be eating habits and activity levels. In other countries people like to enjoy their food slowly, this makes a huge difference because it gives the stomach more time to recognize when it is full. Smaller portions in some cases is a huge factor that can affect the way you gain weight. America’s huge portions play a big part in the fat problem. In America, people spend more money on gyms than anywhere else and still obesity and pre-obesity continues to grow. Many new gym members will exercise less for 3 weeks before they fall off from going when they do not see fast results they expected. In Europe taxes are used to influence healthy habits. Soda is taxed heavily and is expensive, in restaurant you are served smaller portions with no free refills. Our environment doesn't support healthy lifestyle habits either. Lack of neighborhood sidewalks and safe places for recreational activities, Lack of access to healthy foods, and Food advertising all contribute to our unhealthy environment. Genes are largely to blame for obesity today. It is evident that obesity often tracks in families today. Having obese relatives increases a person’s risk for obesity, even if the family members do not live together or share the same habits of exercise and food intake. I think to cut the obesity rate in America in half America needs to adopt habits from other countries, like taxing junk food, banning junk food from schools, and broaden our understanding of obesity.
