Cause and Effect of Obesity
Obesity is one of the main topics in America and also one of the main reasons of death. Never have there have been so many not only overweight, but obese children and adults .Obesity occurs when a person’s weight is far above his ideal body weight (Giddings 12). It has become a major problem in many countries. In some ways, it could be called the plague of the twenty- first century due to many indulging themselves in a surplus of food for every meal they have, therefore becoming overweight and sometimes even morbidly obese (Reilly 20). This essay will examine some of the major causes and effects of obesity.
Obesity is a complex issue with many causes. Poor food choice is one of the main causes. People today eat more and more junk food and fast food. This food is high in fats and cholesterol, and contains too many carbohydrates. When ate in excess the body is overloaded with fats and sugar, which eventually leads one in a state of being obese (Methven 9).
A second cause of obesity is lack of exercise. Most people have changed their lifestyle completely, from one in which there was more walking, physical and outdoor activity, into a sedentary lifestyle with little or no exercise (Reilly 11). Most people now a day’s rely on cars instead of walking. There are fewer physical demands at work or at home because of modern technology and conveniences, and lack of physical education classes in schools. In return a lazier, low energy lifestyle is created where fewer calories are burned on day to day basis, resulting in a significant increase in body fat content among people (Sokol 26).
Another contributing factor is lack of awareness about good eating habits. Mothers give their children too much choice and too little guidance in what to eat.
