Today in society electronics have become more of an essential part of life for most in the western world. These devices can range from cell phones to video games. In a democratic society their needs to be certain games or things censored that may offend or may not be suitable for the public to see or play but do violent games really cause violence in our society? The violence in video games has strict enough laws around them and very seldom causes violence in the real world. The Government has a limitless desire to censor on behalf of parents and families. A variety of censorship schemes have been considered by lawmakers in the past to help parents shield their children’s eyes and ears from potentially offensive content. The latest of this old custom involves recent plans to regulate “violent video games.”
Even decades before the video game “explosion”, kids had many ways to play “violent” games such as cops and robbers. Some critics are troubled officials are claiming that the modern-day equivalent of Cops and Robbers must be controlled by government to protect minors. These officials are suggesting that if kids are exposed to violent imagery in video games, they will become aggressive children or violent adults later in life. Although no evidence has a direct correlation with making aggressive behaviour people across the world insist to control and monitor video game content. While the video game industry was evolving between 1994 and 2000, adolescent violent crime arrests dropped by 44% and young adult arrests dropped by 24% according to the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.1 While that does not necessarily rule out any relationship between video games and youth violence, it certainly should make politicians pause before rushing to conclusions.
