Chain of Command in Law Enforcement

In the field of Law Enforcement there is a chain of command that must be followed in order to keep the department organized and the work efficient. Each member on the chain of command must follow the instructions and orders of the officer to the rank above. For example, if the Lieutenant wants a Patrolman to keep extra surveillance on 13th Avenue, he (the Lieutenant) would first notify the Sergeant and said Sergeant would notify his Patrolman under him in rank to keep extra surveillance on 13th Avenue. Once the order is given, all three officers (Lieutenant, Sergeant, and Patrolman) are on the same page, and know exactly what is going on at the time. If an emergency call comes in, The Sergeant would know who to deploy to the scene for the fastest response time. If said Patrolman did not follow his specific orders and there happened to be an emergency call in the area of 13th Avenue the risk of disaster has risen exponentially
