Coach Carter

Change is something that can’t happen over night to a group, but will happen over time with the right pressure and actions taken. Coach Ken Carter is a man of many attributes that helped him in the conditions to change he placed on the Richmond High School basketball team. Coach Carter used the character of the protagonist in order to emphasis moral lessons. By doing so he proceeded with unorthodox methodology in order to teach a group of underachieving basketball player’s important life lessons. Becoming a new coach to a team (who grew up in a hard-hitting community that has been the same way since he, himself went to Richmond High school) was hard because he was unknown by the students, and had a better lifestyle then many people in the community. The fact that Coach Carter went to this high school, gives him a little more insight to what happens at the school because he has been in the players shoes. When Coach Carter became the head Coach of the team, he became more aware of the conditions that the boys on the team were facing.

Coach Carter decided that he needed to change the life styles of these young boys and start looking towards their futures. When making the team, he made clear and stringent rules for each player by signing a contract stating: “you must maintaining a 2.3 GPA as, attending all classes and sitting in the front row of these classes as well as wearing a shirt and tie on game days”. This insured the coach that the student athletes where putting there best efforts on the court and in the classroom. Coach Carter came into the school with a mind-set of improving statistics and the lives of his team. The team had no guidance or discipline, and that seemed to be the main values that coach carter wanted to emplace in the boys.
