Introduction
The purpose of this narrative is to show and list the skills and characteristics this writer brings to the Mental Health field of Human Skills. It will reflect the positive areas and areas of improvements this writer possess and currently have and/or needs to address to become an effective worker in this field. This writer will briefly explain how she acquired these characteristics and skills.

















This writer was born in a family with deep rooted beliefs in the family structure. It is the belief of this writer’s family any obstacle can be overcome with the assistance and support of the family unit. Family does not necessary mean blood relatives. This writer is not sure whether she is a “natural born helper” or, if it is because of nurture or nature she has the characteristics, skills, and the desire to assist people.
COMPASSION
According to "Merriam Webster" (2014), Compassion is defined as feeling or showing concern for someone who is sick, hurt, poor, etc., (Compassionate). Growing up in the small rural town of Farmville, North Carolina, this writer witnessed adults pulling together to provide many types of human service responsibilities. When my Great-grandmother became bed ridden, this writer remembers how my grandmother and her siblings made arrangements to provide in-home health care services so she could stay at home. As a group my family members discussed what hours he or she was free, who would provide what services, items to be purchase, how the costs of the items would be shared, and other issues required and related to her care. During the time my Great-grandmother became sick there was no nursing home in the area for African Americans. My grandmother and her sibling really did not have a choice to do anything else.
