Abstract
The Cherokee Indian were some of the first settlers in what is now the United States. They had a very traditional and unique culture that helped to shape the culture in the New World after exploration began.

The Cherokee Indian tribe inhabited what is now the south in America long before Europeans or Spanish arrival. There is evidence that Cherokee ancestors settled in America many generations before explorers arrived. The Cherokee lived primarily in the Appalachian Mountain area in Georgia. They spoke an Iroquoian language which was not the spoken language of most other Indian tribes. The Cherokee were bound together through family and belonging to clans was set by family. While the Cherokee shared some cultural and political ideas, they were not really an overall group of people (Stremlau, 2012). Social and political ideas were developed by the local village or town. The Cherokee people were known for their crafts. They were makers of baskets which were made from cane, white oak, hickory, and honeysuckle. Other crafts included carving soapstone which they used for pipes. They also made elaborate dance mask, pottery, and beadwork. Quilt making was another skill they were known for. Cherokee men traditionally wore a breechcloth and mocks in warmer weather and would add leggings and a jacket in colder weather.
