 Children’s identity status is connected with psychological well-being which will affect a child’s social performance and achievement in the future. There are four types of identity statuses: foreclosure, identity diffusion, moratorium, and identity achievement. In these four types of identity status, identity achievement and moratorium will positively affect a child’s psychological well-being so that children can develop on the right track to achieve a positive self-definition. However, identity foreclosure and diffusion will negatively affect a child’s psychological well-being, so that he or she will show self-crisis and self-destructive behavior as a result.
A child’s identity development is effected by some other factors; there are three main factors: personality, family, and peers. First, family is a way in which parents guide their children; it is an important factor which can shape a child’s self-esteem and socialization. For instance, parents usually explain and encourage their children to do stereotypical things such as boys should mow the lawn and repair equipment, but women should do housework like cleaning the house and taking care of infants. Second, personality will shape children to become a unique person. It can lead to identity achievement or identity crisis. It can play a vital role in shaping a child into a flexible and open-minded person. For example, children who are open-minded are able to change their thinking. Children can logically solve math problems by using different methods if they are more mentally flexible than other children. This advantage can make it easier to achieve education goals as children but could also lead to meeting problem-solving demands in their job as an adult. Third, culture can influence a coherent sense of self despite changes over the lifespan.
