Brian Gumble IC1 9/8/08 Mr. Shawn China Hosting 2008 Olympics Totalitarian Olympics! That is what some people are saying because of China hosting the 2008 Olympics. There has been much controversy about how china should not have been allowed to host the Olympics because of their totalitarian government. But dose that have anything to do with the Olympic Games? I feel as though the Olympics are an international pastime and that saying a country should not host or participate in it is ridiculous. The Olympics have been a tradition since 1896. Part of that tradition is hosting it in a different country every four years. There is a long list of places the Olympics have been held, and every time I look at that list and see a year and a country I can think back and remember something special about that year and that country. The Olympics are international any country can compete. What makes the Olympics special is that it is held in a different place every year. Each year and each country brings a different and special atmosphere to the games. That is one reason why it so important to have it somewhere different every year. This past Olympic Games where of course held in China and I can say with out a doubt it was a success. We had several gold medals in many different countries. The United States it self won over one hundred medals. With such success we can not discriminate on a country and the way they run it. However, I do not agree with the way China runs its country. I believe that having freedom is the only way to have a thriving country. With the 2008 Olympic Games behind us I am excited to see what the 2021 games hold in store for our world. I believe that if we remember the traditions and keep the attitudes of past Olympics we can keep politics out of the Olympics which is how it should be.
