Making the choice on what you want to do with your life is a big decision. From day one in kindergarten they asked you what you want to be when you grow up. Of course most of us wanted to be something we will never achieve. There is a broad spectrum of careers out there to choose from. The military is a frequently picked choice. All over the country people are making the decision to join our nation’s military forces. For some this will be the greatest choice and for others it will be their worst.
Choosing to be a soldier has many advantages. One advantage being that not only do you have total medical coverage but your family is covered as well. Plenty of times I have been on Beale Air force Base for doctors appointments with my fathers’ healthcare coverage. This is a really good factor because many American civilians can’t afford to get health insurance. According to Mark J. Perry “31% of Americans without health insurance live in households making $50k or more and 38% are between 18-34 years old.” Another good qualifying factor is that the military will always keep you working. You will never be without a job. Whereas being a civilian you have to go through a great ordeal of trouble just to get employment. The military has four branches with a range of jobs from cooking to fighting on our front lines. On top of them giving you the security of a job and healthcare they will send you to school for free. This is the aspect that personally drew me into the army. Without joining I would have gone deep into debt trying to pay for college just like tons of other Americans. Being in the army I can keep my main MOS and continue to go to college for anything I aspire to do. The great thing is once you finish that schooling if something else interests you the will pay for you to go to school for your new goal too.
