Cigarettes or Alcohol? What are the differences between alcohol and cigarettes? Alcohol is mainly associated with social events while cigarettes are normally smoked as an individual. Alcohol also has an affect that shows up much sooner compared to cigarettes, which take many years for the serious negative side effects to set in. Hygienically, they differ as well. Many people are not attracted to smokers because of the smell, they can turn teeth yellow, smoker’s cough, and smoking cigarettes is major cause of bad breath. Alcohol can cause weight gain and is known to aggravate acne, and many people aren’t fond of the taste it leaves on the drinker’s breath. There are many other differences between alcohol and cigarettes such as; cost, amount consumed, frequency of use, and the way alcohol can change a person completely while cigarettes do not. What draws people to alcohol and cigarettes? There are numerous reasons why people smoke and drink. A common draw to alcohol is the affect it has on the user’s mind and body. In moderate use, alcohol can make the drinker livelier, easier and more relaxed. You can also talk more easily and feel less tired (Moelker). Alcohol is almost always associated with parties and other social events, which is why it is more acceptable to American society than smoking cigarettes. When people consume alcohol, they tend to lose their inhibitions and can be much more outgoing than they are sober, a reason many teenagers like to drink. The taste is not usually what draws people to alcohol, if that were the case, Coke and Sprite would be staples at every party. Smoking is different in its usage compared to alcohol. Smoking is usually picked up by one’s peers, not started on their own. Some people say that smoking relaxes them while others simply have no explanation to why they smoke.
