Question 2: What is the evidence that effective techniques are utilized to create a well managed classroom?
“The classroom is a social and learning environment that helps to shape students’ attitudes and feelings towards particular subject matter, peers and teachers, along with perceptions of the purpose and value of education in general” (Salant, 2007). Classroom management cans influences students’ views about the nature and purpose of learning. As a result, teachers must carefully manage their classroom. During my Practicum II and III, there are many evidences that effective techniques are utilized by my mentor teacher, Ms. R, to create a well-managed classroom.
To create a well-managed classroom, I must build positive relationships between students, teacher and student, and teacher and parents (Roscoe & Orr, 2010). To achieve this, I would layout the behavioral expectation and classroom procedure. In the behavioral expectation, I would communicate and reinforce behavioral expectation such as the basic classroom rules and classroom guidelines about respect, cooperation, achievement, and safety. To create an effective and efficient classroom management, establishing, teaching, and enforcing appropriate classroom rules that promote learning, socialization, and safety are important (Wong, 2011). Some of the general classroom rules are “follow directions the first time they are given, raised your hand and wait for permission to speak, stay in your seat unless you have permission to do otherwise, keep hand, feet, and objects to yourself, and no cursing or teasing” (Wong, 2011). This technique was clearly used in Ms. R’s classroom, my mentor teacher of Practicum II and II. During the first week of school, she would layout all behavioral expectations and classroom procedures.
