Coaching those with Disabilities
Historically people with disabilities, those physically and mentally, were pictured as people who cannot take care of themselves, let alone contribute to society at large. Now in modern times, things have changed, however I still come across those who still have this previous mindset. Sadly there are still stereotypes that society has regarding people with disabilities. Stigmas like people with disabilities all want sympathy. This is not true, as one living with disabilities that is the last thing I want. I just want to live my life and contribute to society, which the government and other organizations make it hard to do so. Another stigma is that people with disabilities do not work. For the most part this, of course is not true. It took me a long time, but I am currently in school to get my masters in wellness psychology. I also have a bachelors degree in both sociology and psychology. I also blog regarding psychology and nutrition, in order to help others live a more healthy and productive life (Mittan, 2013).
The next stigma is that the physically disabled means that every one of us is mentally disabled. For the most part this is untrue. I had to overcome brain damage from a trauma, however I relearned everything that I needed to know, in order to improve my life. Too, I had a daughter that had cerebral palsy, where she had severe physical disabilities, but had a mental capacity of her age group. She was very intelligent with a high IQ. My brother, who is physically disabled as well has an IQ of 175. Not only are people with disabilities capable mentally, some have really high mental capacity. The next stigma is that we are not independent, which is untrue, except maybe for my daughter who could not dress, feed, or do anything for herself.
