What does Shakespeare tell us about the characters of the three speakers in 3 scenes from Macbeth through what he says and how he says it? In three scenes of Macbeth: Act 1 scene 1, act 1 scene 3 and act 4 scene 1, William Shakespeare, one of the greatest playwrights in the history of literature, drew a clear and profound picture with dark spaces to show us the characters of the three speakers. These people appear to be wicked, inhumane and insidious with minds full of evil things. Let’s begin with Act 1 Scene 1 of Macbeth. “When shall we three meet again? In thunder, lightning or in rain?” That’s exactly what the first speaker says to the others. In these two sentences, Shakespeare used the rhyme: “again – rain” to create an interesting rhythm that makes the speaker abnormal and enigmatic. There is a meeting of three people but we cannot know who they are and what they are going to do. It’s still a mystery that needs us to explore. We can easily catch the words: “Thunder, lightning, rain”. These three pictographic words give us frightening, scary, miserable feelings. We can also realise that eerie peals of thunder, fork of lightning and heavy rain often appear in dreadful ghost stories. It’s time disgusting ghosts began to make obsession to us by doing horrible things. Why don’t these three people meet each other on a fresh, sunny day but in thunder, lightning or in rain? Maybe they are planning to do something which is very bad and mysterious. The second speaker answers the question of the first one: “When the hurly-burly’s done, when the battle’s lost and won” This person mentions “the hurly-burly” which gives us the image of chaos and noise. The sentence “When the battle’s lost and won” makes me imagine a picture of bloodstained war. It seems like a very long period of time suffering from frightful battle.
