Many writers throughout the years have shed light on the topic of a dystopia or alternatively cacotopia. A dystopia is a fictional society, usually portrayed as existing in a future time, when the conditions of life are extremely bad due to deprivation, oppression, or terror. On the other hand a utopia refers to a hypothetical perfect society. In general, a corrupted government creates an immoral society and conditions the masses to believe the society is proper and just or perfect. The book Brave New World written by Aldous Huxley is a depiction of a utopia and the movie Artificial Intelligence directed by Steven Spielberg is an example of a dystopian society. Both of these products show their perspective of a better future world or society. In Brave New World, the World State represents this guiding motto: Community, Identity, and Stability. In the movie Artificial Intelligence, the humans build robots for personal reasons or as a form of entertainment and pleasure. I will be comparing two of the main characters and the values both worlds’ posses. I will also conclude which of the two stories show a more helpful future.


The people of World State are immoral. Their society is divided into five different castes: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, or Epsilon, Alpha being the highest cast and Epsilon being the lowest. Throughout the history of the World State their main focus has been to remove strong emotions, desires and human relationships from society. The citizens of World State posses no values or morals. They’re mentally, emotionally, and physically conditioned. Religion doesn’t exist in their society. Due to their conditioning no one knows the meaning of tradition, family, culture, etc. They’re all conditioned to think that whatever they do and however they live is the ideal and right way of living. It’s an advanced technology world which is completely the opposite of our modern day society.
